It's True

Feeling powerful and infused.

Feeling like a floating piece of lint.

Feeling alive.

Feeling alone.

Feeling surrounded.

Feeling un drowned

Like I just re woke

Like I just re wrote

Like I've never left

Like I was only just yesterday crying

Only just yesterday climbing

Only just yesterday dodging the 4 square rubber ball bounced from my brother's hands into my square

Into my space, my mind, holding all these memories like feathers sure to blow away.

Like the moments I'm not proud of.

Like the moments I wasn't a part of.

Like the moment that may or may not have existed.

Like Santa Clause

Like Tinkerbell

Like my sophomore Halloween costume

Like the chair in the upstairs library

Beside the staircase

Beside the theater books

Beside your backpack and the little black book with colored ink drawings of figures and bark leading into words leading into your winding thoughts in the light of day I proudly wore all that I could of you.

Because I didn't want to go home.

Didn't want to be me.

Liked being a we.  Together.  Housing love.  Houses.

Like the ones we grew up in.

Big with two parents

Two parents who we saw crying

For years

then showing us true courage

Showing us forgiveness .

faith.

Love.

Love in my veins makes me run.

But not away from.  To.

To what?

I'll never know.

I do keep you

It's all in my back
my memories of you.
You with the parting hair.
You with your candle.

I do keep you.
Haven't had time to untie anything.
Even if I did, I wouldn't.
I keep you. In the levator scapulae muscles,
the ones that hold my neck, connecting to blades.

Behind me is a giant stuffed bear wearing a bath robe.
He is mine.
I named him Wesley.
Behind me to my right is a painted goddess in red acrylic oil.
She doesn't have a name,
instead she clutches a shard of broken glass.

Maybe she too has wind swept emotions,
Episodes of mania, grip slipping nights.
Like when I locked myself in the studio,
fighting the slave owner psyche.
My heels felt like hooves.
A saddled horse, kicking holes in the closet door.

I was drawn to the hammer beneath the sink.
Took it to the large mirror in the hall.
Beads of light crashed to the floor, spilling heat of rage.
7 years of bad luck, felt about right.

And again, I think of you.
How you danced in your quiet house,
How I drank confessions from your temples as you held me goodnight.
The January snow muffling mangled sobs.
Your bar stool's red swiveling seat.

My heart space tunnels, gliding awareness past darkened wine cork collections.
What was a metal ball shoots down tilted pin ball lanes,
rounding corners of birthday clubs,
lighting up ocean side promises, continuing on,
through my chest, through Wesley's stuffing,
out the walls of the room, a black hole,
expanding endlessly in every direction.
I'm a book, open on a picnic table,
hit with digging wind.
Hardwood underneath ripped up carpet.
Your nakedness under new t-shirt blue bedding.
Your rolled up tubes of toothpaste.
Your YouTube Valentine.

"Anybody ever tell you how beautiful you are?"
 "I adore you. "
"There's a place for you here, always."

While in Bray, after the Italian chocolate, there was a climb.
Each of my steps landed inside your own.
Then later a beach of round stones.  And portraits.
The little girl child flying face first into the rising tide.
Chordoroy legs, train rides, frisbee tosses and laughter.
So much laugher ...I wonder why I had to burn you.
Playing with fire, fingering the wax
I'm kind of a pyromaniac.

A siren screams down the street
The curtains my father installed hang translucent, matching the clouded sky.
The albums crated in soft, clear light.

One time, you didn't go away.
Disintegrate, Bleed out, or burn to ashes.
Once you remained through the bucking, back stabbing fear.
Through the attempts to smash and incinerate,
emasculate, ruin, flood.

After my typical upheaval, you returned.

At first it was distant sound.
A yodel bridging the valley,
humming, a buzz. An omen.

Then a package arrived in the mail.
You began on the day I fed you your first avocado,
Ending with telling Topanga night drives, glue stick pictures of me stretching the length of a tree.

I softened to the echo.
On our way to the Getty
Lydia's backseat felt like warm water,
A steamed salt bath.
You pouring tea.
You in your coveralls, shaving, suggested we put the mattress on the floor.
We did.
It's underneath me now.

Found a poem of the night

I feel daunted
Haunted by the half moon
I cry lonesome
Wails come out to make a monsoon
Swooning But I stifle
Clear ink runs out my nose like bullets through a rifle

Out by the fire escape
Cuz you were sleeping so soundly
you said I was wasting my youth on you.  Is that your truth or just sleep talk too?

Snoring.
Like the good little girl
I ignore it--

Tracing where I been
Wanting to floor it
 I take the keys
to make a big leave
Out the door sigh heaved
But your asleep.

And you are not my battle
As the wails sing out I see an ironing board under a plaid shirt's elbow
While the man belonging to such elbow lifts kids of garbage bins.
Is he looking for an iron?

In the morning hours things are much quieter.
The night sky is gel lit by yesterdays emissions.
And begrudgingly I stop all this weeping and turn for home.
When I arrive it's like I've never gone.

I light a candle.
pretend its my birthday
The mint wafts good cheer and  hurray decorations askew themselves in the dark.

Twisted and out of sight
Undercover
I suspect that you'll outgrow me
Tell me eloquently  that you must now leave
That its over
And your sorry I didn't see.

Didn't see what? It coming.
The haunt shadows
Like those of the wild haired young man pushing me down the stairs.
Summer 2002.
Show Choir camp.
I’m remembering it now…
a blonde boy took me
to the basement of a church.

You man.
Then crying at the prayer moon
I woman.
Now typing beside our maradi gras candle.

Tryin to calm my mind.
Not having to know it all.
Trying to bridge the gap.
Heal by the night of the flame.
Forgive and un-break.
Connect to the source.
Spirituality cradles sexuality.
Finding the goddess.

Trusting,  my goodness.

To my Kaitlin,

When my head is open I can feel the light
from the clouds above me have made room
for the sun it has shone so strong these many years
and for the warmth on this earth, I am grateful.

You came to me in these rolling seats
at a studio with smooth marble floors.
I arrived with you at an appointed time
and we picked it up rather fast.

Smart women need not be told what to do-
get the hang, paint th 'llusion, make it work.
Sisters who've yet to meet, will find the other on 2nd Street-
you moved on, I moved up--I felt and then I shook.

Shaken up, bacon bites- leave the plate at dinner
Cracks in my spine, a body unaligned -what's love to a story-tell sinner?

The look on your face when you sing with the light
be it inside you, or through you- you are only Right.

Never wrong, not a top- balancing on, just waiting to stop
We are two sides of one heart--the spring and the lake- the key and it's beautiful lock.

from long hair

If I push you away, will you push back? A Joanna Bateman Story

The sky mellows into nectarine.
It's quite the scene.
To be with you is to know that love is mean.
The way your father kicked your brother.
You watched it all through the summer screen.
Looking back in the book of time,
thumbing through history to climb
It doesn't repeat itself, it rhymes.
Remember once you told me that?
After that, I heard it all the time.

Does that ever happen to you?
You learn about something and then all of a sudden that something is everywhere?
It was like that for me and love.
Once I found it in a blanket wrapped so soft around me naked
In the arms of some forsaken woman ---whom I'll belong to for the rest of my life,
she is my favorite man's wife.
And then it was love everywhere.
Sleep walk love, wake up on the stairs.
Sleep talk love, wake up with the bears.
Sleep swim love, skinny dipping 'neath the stars.
Sleep drunk love, love on earth through Jupiter and Mars.
But I'm getting side tracked.
I always do.
He is a worthy man,
He is like you.

My moods are all so temperamental.
All the time it's heart vs. mental.
This practice I give up.
I'll drive you to a corner.
Drive you out -my heart feels warmer
 without you here.
You have everything to fear.
A ship I've no idea how to steer.
The seat belt's broken, so I cry
into the traffic light so high.
It's my way of describing all the webs.
The veins and all the loose little threads.
I haven't got an ounce of control.
My friends they notice things I've stole.
And wouldn't it be grand
to live in a city not built on quick sand?
If I could mean what you think I seem I say
just seems I say
different things to different people every day.
There is no up or down or right wrong way.
When i tell the truth
I see you sink
I brace myself to think
of volleying you back and forth
In, to and from the matted hell.
A circle charred from all this light
I'm not a lot of fun,
A common misconception of our warm and lovely sun.

When we sleep together we hold close the night.
I want to breathe
And you still cling
And it hurts me to push you away
So beside you still and drifting, yet I stay.
Boy I wish that I could paint it another way,
but the brush strokes come some different smile watered down.
I've seen this before.
It's sadly nothing new.
Out of love and dying.
Just this time it's with you.

The sunset by the mountains breaking softly by the sea
Reminds me of a date I had
When you were not with me.
There was a boy - a model man
and me-my fanny pack, made sure to clasp my hand
with my other behind my back-
I didn't want to cheat you.
I didn't want to stray.
I didn't want to feel the things I ended feeling anyway.

Now I got to thinkin how I feel when we are kissin
or when on our trip to my first mission.
It's a pity and a shame
I end them all this way.
It's a curse because I make it so.
  Love's a broken fossil though.
I toss it up beyond our house.
Beyond the hills and letters. Stacks of bills.
Moments before the quake, with all the love inside us still
              I break.
